The QUARTZO is a CBRN respiratory protection system specifically designed for children from 2 years of age and young adolescents.

Unlike conventional full-face masks, which depend on an effective facial seal and the user’s breathing effort to draw air through the filter, the QUARTZO uses an assisted ventilation system that supplies filtered air into the hood and maintains positive pressure during use.

This configuration is particularly suitable for children, whose smaller facial dimensions and respiratory capacity may make the correct use of conventional adult-sized full-face masks more difficult.

The system combines an expandable protective hood, a battery-powered ventilation unit and an NBC/CBRN filter with a 40 mm RD40 connection, allowing the system to be rapidly prepared when respiratory protection is required.

For children under approximately 4 years of age, carrying the ventilation unit using the back support is recommended. For older children, the waist/belt support may be used depending on the child’s size and comfort.

Assisted Ventilation and Positive Pressure

One of the key features of the QUARTZO is its ventilation system.

The unit supplies approximately 45 L/min of air, creating positive pressure inside the hood. This means that the user does not rely exclusively on their own lung capacity to draw air through the filter.

This feature may be particularly relevant for young children, for whom the breathing resistance associated with certain filters can make a conventional respirator more difficult or uncomfortable to use.

Positive pressure inside the hood also helps limit the entry of external contaminants while the system is correctly assembled, fitted with an appropriate filter and used within its specified operating conditions.

Specifically Designed for Children

Conventional full-face respirators depend on a correct facial fit to create an effective seal. In young children, smaller facial dimensions can make it difficult to achieve an adequate seal with equipment designed for adults.

The QUARTZO uses a different approach.

Instead of relying on a tight-fitting mask placed directly against the child’s face, the system uses a protective hood that surrounds the head, combined with assisted ventilation and positive pressure.

The hood can be quickly expanded and placed over the child’s head. Once the ventilation unit is activated, air passes through the filter and is supplied to the inside of the system.

This configuration is intended to provide a solution better suited to the physical and respiratory characteristics of young children.

Multi-Layer Hood

The hood features a four-layer construction:

This structure is designed to provide mechanical resistance and durability during use and storage.

The material has been tested in accordance with ASTM D882, a standard used to evaluate the tensile properties of thin plastic films and sheeting.

Protection Against Aerosols and Chemical Agents

According to the technical data provided for the equipment, the system has undergone testing for protection against aerosols.

It has also been tested for exposure to mustard gas (CWA) in accordance with MIL-STD-282, Method 204.1.1, with a stated protection period of up to 240 minutes under the specific test conditions.

The actual level of protection always depends on several factors, including the contaminant present, its concentration, the filter used, the condition of the equipment, correct system setup and environmental conditions.

Power Supply and Operating Time

The ventilation unit uses 4 CR123A batteries, allowing the power source to be easily replaced without requiring proprietary battery systems.

The stated operating time can reach approximately 15 hours of continuous use, depending on operating conditions and the batteries installed.

Integrated Hydration System

The equipment includes an integrated hydration system that allows the child to drink without immediately removing the protective system.

This feature may be particularly useful during extended periods of use or in situations where the user is required to remain in a protected environment for an extended period.

Transport and Storage

When not in use, the QUARTZO can be folded and stored in a compact format.

Its design allows it to be stored, for example, in a backpack, bag, cupboard or emergency kit, keeping the system ready for rapid deployment when required.

RD40 Compatibility

The system uses a 40 mm RD40 connection, a format widely used in respiratory protection equipment.

According to the manufacturer’s specified configuration, the ventilation unit can also be used with certain compatible full-face masks featuring a NATO/RD40 40 mm connection.
